Marriage Counseling 101 Essential Tips And Information
By: Phoenix Delray

Marriage is a commitment, and as such, it requires consistent time and effort. Problems in any committed relationship are inevitable, and sometimes, if these problems are ignored or otherwise not adequately addressed at the beginning, conflicts can escalate to such a level that resolution may seem impossible. This is where qualified counseling services come in. Many couples, married and not married, take advantage of this valuable service as they navigate the often bumpy road of a long term relationship.

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy, helps couples to better understand conflicts and ways to resolve them. Facilitated by an impartial mediator, these sessions allow couples to improve their communication and problem solving abilities and work together towards a relationship. Licensed marriage and family therapists mediate these sessions and help participants to focus on the relationship and work through the issues involved.

Many couples find that they only need a few sessions to help determine the source of the conflict and the best ways to resolve it, while others find that they need counseling on a more long term basis. Some of the issues that are commonly dealt with in these counseling sessions include divorce, infidelity, physical or mental conditions, finances, unemployment, sexual difficulties, child rearing conflicts, changing roles, blended families, and similar situations and circumstances.

While taking about the problems in your relationship with a marriage counselor may be difficult, and conflicts between you and your partner may make communication between you difficult, it is important to remember that the purpose of these sessions is to voice your concerns and opinions to your partner, while an impartial mediator offers advice. If your partner refuses to attend these sessions, you can still benefit from the therapy on your own.

When you are searching for a marriage counselor or couples therapist, be sure to find one who is licensed, certified, and has undergone specific training. Ask any potential counselors if they are members of the AMFT or licensed by the state, about their education and background, experience with your specific issues, rates, length of each session, session policies, and the location of their office.

The decision to attend marriage counseling should not be taken lightly. Be sure to discuss all of your options available with your partner and with the counselor that you choose. Remember, admitting that a problem or issue exists is the first and most important step in the resolution of the issue.
